Introduction to Asset Lifecycle Delivery
Welcome to PIAM-650: Asset Lifecycle Delivery. If the previous courses in this program were about drawing the blueprints and planning the journey, this course is where the rubber meets the road. We've explored the high-level strategies, the financial models, and the data systems that form the backbone of modern asset management. Now, we turn our attention to the practical, hands-on execution of those plans throughout an asset's life.
Think of it this way: your Strategic Asset Management Plan (SAMP) is the roadmap, and your Asset Management Plans (AM Plans) are the detailed itineraries for each vehicle in your fleet. This course is about actually driving the vehicles, performing the maintenance, managing the fuel and spare parts, and making the tough calls about when a vehicle needs a major overhaul or when it's time to replace it entirely. This is the domain of the Infrastructure Lifecycle Coordinator, where strategy becomes action.
This is where you will build the skills to answer critical operational questions: * What is the most cost-effective mix of maintenance for our portfolio of assets? * How do we ensure we have the right spare parts for a critical pump station in a remote location, especially before a major storm? * When is it better to rehabilitate an old bridge versus replacing it with a modern equivalent? * What are our legal and financial responsibilities when we decommission a facility?
To get you ready to answer these questions with confidence, we have organized the course into three practical modules that walk you through the entire delivery cycle.
Module 1: Operations and Maintenance Strategy
Here, we focus on the day-to-day work of keeping assets running. You will learn to develop a sophisticated Maintenance Strategy that goes far beyond simply fixing things when they break. We will explore the trade-offs between corrective, preventive, and predictive maintenance to optimize for cost, risk, and performance. The goal is to ensure asset Availability and efficiency, making sure the services our communities rely on are there when they need them.
Module 2: Capital Works and Supply Chain Management
This module shifts focus to major projects and the logistics that support them. You will learn to manage Renewal and Rehabilitation projects, understanding the key differences and when to apply each approach. We will also tackle the often-underestimated challenge of Supply Chain Management. A brilliant engineering plan is worthless without the materials and parts to execute it. You will practice skills like Critical Spares Analysis to ensure your organization has what it needs, when it needs it, even in the face of disruption.
Module 3: Asset Disposal and End-of-Life
Every asset lifecycle has a final chapter. In this module, you will learn to manage the Disposal and Decommission of assets responsibly. This involves much more than just demolition. We will cover the crucial financial and accounting aspects, such as Depreciation and Residual Value, and the importance of Environmental Compliance. You will come to understand the difference between an asset's Useful Life and its Economic Life—a key distinction that drives timely and cost-effective replacement decisions.
This course bridges the gap between the spreadsheet and the field. It will equip you with the practical competencies to manage the physical realities of infrastructure and ensure that strategic objectives are successfully delivered on the ground.
